#29 Connection from Windows remote connection not showing preexisting open programs?

When I connect to an Ubunutu-running machine through Windows 7's Remote Desktop Connection, all of the programs that were already running won't show up anywhere on the desktop, the "taskbar" at the top, or in the four workspaces. They are still running as running killall <name> in the terminal proves. This means I need to leave the connection up without switching accounts or putting the computer to sleep if I want to keep access to my Minecraft server console. I can't imagine that this is intended. Anyone know why it's doing this and how I can fix it?
