Hi Aidan - this list is not very active; yours is the first message in 12 years :) There is a forum at http://xplanet.sourceforge.net/FUDforum2/ which is a little more active (still not very) if you have any questions. Just a few lines to introduce myself.I'm a geologist living in Scotland. For years I used the Hewgill version of XEarth on my windows machines, hooked up to collect earthquake data. I'm now trying to get that working on my Linux desktop. -- Aidan Karley, ScotlandMD and Senior Wellsite Geologist Oilfield Geoscience |

Changes since the last version: * Added -north path, -target path, and -path_relative_to options. * Added -output_start_index option. * Print a list of compile-time options when using the -version option. * Fixed a bug where orbits were not drawn for bodies using SPICE kernels. * Added ssec_map option to configuration files to use University of Wisconsin cloud maps. I've added the -fork option, which runs xplanet in the background. This is useful on MS Windows so that you don't need to keep a DOS window open. There was also a bug when using the -projection option where stars weren't drawn the first time. My numbering scheme has no reasoning behind it; it just seemed like a good time to bump the version up to 1.1! As always, let me know if you find any bugs. Hari |

Hi All - I've set up a phpBB2 based forum at http://xplanet.sourceforge.net/phpBB2/ This mailing list will still be active in the future, but please try out the forums! Hari |

This release fixes a bug with eclipse shadows. Also the Timer now sleeps until it's time to wake up, instead of sleeping for a set time. This makes a difference when the computer is put to sleep while Xplanet is sleeping. Hari |

The -hibernate and -idlewait options are now supported on OS X. Also the native Quicktime library can be used to read and write image files instead of libjpeg/libpng, etc. There are some other small bug fixes. Enjoy, Hari |

Changes in this version: Markers on the far side of a planet were being drawn when they shouldn't have been. Satellites were not drawn for some locales. This has been fixed. Added -projection random. This picks a random projection. |

I just released version 1.0.5. I have fixed some locale bugs, particularly for some European users. The windows version is not any different as it only supports the "C" locale. Hari |

Hi Michael - it is at least partly a locale issue. In my default "C" locale, I cannot reproduce your problem, but if I set my LANG environment variable to de_DE.ISO8859-15, then I get the same problem you do with the marker file. I have put a new version at http://xplanet.sourceforge.net/beta/ Hopefully this should fix your problem. There were several locale issues which I have fixed (?). For example, the date string was not written properly for many locales. Floating point values in input files such as marker and arc files must now be in the "C" format, where the decimal separator is the '.' character and not the ','. If any native non-english speakers find any more issues like this, please let me know! Hari |

Hi Hari, I don't think it is a problem of the LANG enviroment and the different delimiter characters. I just installed the older version of xplanet (Version 0.94) and used the same markerfile as I used with Version 1.03. In Version 0.94 everything is fine. Maybe this might help you finding the fault. Maybe you changed something regarding rendering? Greetings Michael |

This is a tricky problem, and one I still am not sure how to solve. The problem is a locale issue. The de_DE locale, along with many others, uses the ',' as a decimal separator, rather than the '.' character. In order to be compatible with xearth, the ',' character is assumed to be a delimiter like the space or tab character. I think the best thing is to not do this, and just use spaces or tabs as delimiters in future versions. You can edit the isDelimiter() method in src/parse.cpp to remove the ',' character. Another workaround, which may not be satisfactory, is to set the LANG environment variable to "C" before running xplanet. If anyone has any good suggestions I would be happy to hear them. Thanks, Hari |

Hello everybody, I have a problem using lat/lon positions in the marker file. I want to display airroutes from using xplanet. So I started to convert the location data of the airports to the format used in the xplant-marker file. e.g. "KJFK = 40:38.4 N / 73:46.7 W --> 40.64 / -73.78" If you add a line ' 40.64 -73.78 "KJFK" ' to your marker file you will see, the Airport is in the ocean. :-(( The same effect happens for KLAX (Los Angeles Airport) but OMDB = 25:15.2 N / 55:21.9 E --> 25.25 / 55.37 '25.25 55.37 "Dubai Airport"' seems to be correct. You might say. Use the data from TGN as mentioned in the marker file. But these data doesn't seem to be correct. Can anybody help to fix this behavior? Michael |

Hi All - This version incorporates support for JPL SPICE kernels, which are used for spacecraft ephemerides. Also I have fixed a little bug where Xplanet would exit immediately if not compiled with FreeType support. Enjoy, Hari |

Quoting Mike Campbell <mik...@or...>: > Since there is a new moon coming up is this the correct positions? Can > anyone tell me what is going on? Why does this strike you as being incorrect? Hi Don - there's a bug in xplanet-0.95a. In libimage/jpeg.c add fclose(infile) before every return statement in read_jpeg() It was probably a file-descriptor leak, although the performance is still awful. I'll see if there's any other obvious things to fix. Is there a reason you're using the old version? I ran version 1.0.3 with a large marker file with lots of images and it rendered almost immediately. Have a look at the earth_markers config file which is distributed with version 1.0.3 to see how to use marker files. Hari |

Hello, First let me thank you on xplanet. I have used it with several projects. However I have run into a small problem. I have a marker file with 307 entries. Xplanet plots 250 then gives this error for the remaining 57 entries; Can't read image us.jpg Can't read image cn.jpg Can't read image at.jpg etc... for the final 57 lines in the marker. It does find these same images for the 1st 250 lines. A few lines from the marker file are below. Are you aware of this issue? Any ideas on how to overcome it? I am using version .95a and .94 on Solaris 2.8. Xplanet requires maps in a simple rectangular projection. The top left corner should be lat 90, lon -180, and the bottom right corner should be lat -90, lon 180. Just use linear interpolation to convert pixel values to lat/lon and vice versa. For maps of a smaller geographical area, read the mapbounds entry in README.config. Hari |

I am interested in learning how to make maps for xplanet. The problem is that I have 4 million markers I want to show on the map. So my idea is to color a pixel on the map for each marker point. But since I have so many points, why not make a maker-map and then merge it with a earth map to get a final map. Using something like xplanet -image day.jpg -cloud_image maker.jpg -shade 100 -output day-maker.jpg -geometry widthxheight But how do I build the maker-map ? As I see it. I have to have a formula that can map a (latitude, longitude) to a (x,y) pixel coordinate. Do there exist any software that can make it easy for me ? What information or code should I read ? The map at http://www.geourl.org/ is similar to what I want to make. |
