Hi Everyone, Sorry for the delay in development/bug-fixes/e-mail replies/etc.. I'm still settling in to my new job so xP developments are going to be a little sparse until I get myself into a nice happy little rut. ;) Here's what up next for xP development. 1. The installer currently expects a larger xP source tarball then actually exists. There is a current workaround for this if you download the source tarballs from http://xpine.sourceforge.net/xpine and tell the installer the files are "ALREADY" on your local machine (there's a radio button for this option). But I WILL FIX the installer so that it no longer expects files of a certain size, but instead gets that information from the HTTP query. 2. Both xP and xP-Installer crash when you click on a button in GNOME/Sawfish. This is a bug in the XClass library which took me almost 2 weeks to track down. I've patched the xP library to fix this bug, but the binary installer on Sourceforge still has this bug. The next release will correct this problem entirely. 3. VERSION RENUMBERING. It occurred to me almost immediately after the last release that 0.0.15 does not reflect the current state of xP development. Therefore, the next release will be numbered 0.1.1. 0.0 implies that the project is still more in planning than it is in development (which was true about 9 months ago), but it has undergone extensive development and most of the design decisions have already been made. The major version number should still be 0 because the base code is still not complete, but the minor version number should be 1 because quite a bit of code has been written. The revision number will be 1 because the last release (0.0.15) should have been 0.1.0. That's all for now. Like I said, I still need to get settled with my job and new life in Seattle (did I mention that?) before I can get back to development. I just wanted you all to know that the project is far from dead. Take care, -bri |

I have found the source of the X_GrabKey error in the xP installer. This would also follow to being an error in xP. The reason Gnome users are receiving this error is because Gnome does not seem to tolerate hot-keys. For the uninitiated, hotkeys are those little underlined letters on drop down menu items or buttons. You can usually invoke these by pressing Alt+(Letter) and that would be the same as clicking on the drop down menu or the button. xP doesn't make use of this too much because its trying to use Pine's key commands exclusively. But XClass95 includes Hotkeys in Message Boxes by default. I'll try to go through the XClass source and strip out all the hotkeys so I can play nice with Gnome -- but I want everyone to know that I'm not happy about this!! Looks like it might have something to do with Ximian Gnome. I tried from an X connection from my laptop, which is running a Windows Xserver, and it ran without a problem... Any ideas? |

I'm having the same error. I'm using Redhat 7.1 with the latest updates. I'm afraid this isn't the case - I made sure all pine threads were killed and then tried (re)starting it and same async reply from Xlib... The only thing that seems to help is to delete ~/.pinerc and start over. (As a sidenote, the terminal where I start xpine gets all hosed after exiting). I'll see if I can debug it some more and I'll let you know what I come up with. Since you don't seem to get this behaviour at all it would be interesting to know what the environment you are developing on looks like? It worked for me and the install went fine. But every time I exit xpine and then start it back up I get: Xlib: unexpected async reply (sequence 0x1258)! and I have to delete my .pinerc and start all over again. I'm also not sure how much of the functionality is supposed to be in place and how much is still very much work under construction? Like if I run setup I see how pine enters setup in the terminal window from where I started it but the GUI doesn't do anything. Using IMAP I see how I'm prompted for my password in the terminal window as well but the GUI doesn't show anything - is there a way to currently open an IMAP folder? Gareth, I see what the error is, your compiler is just a little more sensitive than mine. I've changed the xp-0.0.15.tar.gz source file. Try running the installer again. A new release of The xP E-mail System is now available. xP provides an intuitive, high quality, graphical (X11) user interface to the University of Washington's Pine=AE Messaging System. xP aims to provid= e an interface that is welcoming and easy to use for the new user, while still retaining the look, feel and key commands of Pine for the experienced user. xP is still in the pre-alpha stage of development (meaning <50% of the code has been written). However, as of version 0.0.15 it has basic usability as an e-mail and news client (meaning that it can read & write messages). Hey Matt, The build command for Pine takes a different argument because you are using OS X. You need to issue: cd /usr/src/pine ./build osx "slx" is a Linux build argument. Pine is probably complaining because you are using OS X and requesting a Linux build. Fortunately the new version of Pine (4.33) recognizes OS X as a Unix-like operating system and has added the osx build command. As for the other errors, they are occuring because you need to have the Xlib programming libraries installed. I'm afraid I don't remember the source distribution site right now.. And lastly, as for termio.h, that is the termcap library that is supposed to ship with Emacs, unless you don't have emacs installed. I think the last version of xP included the files you need so look for termio.h in the xP archive and just copy it to /usr/include. Good luck, let me know about you're progress with an xP trial on OS X.. Take care, -bri On Fri, 1 Jun 2001, Matt Ackeret wrote: > > Hmm, I'm trying to get Xpine up and running on Mac OS X. Hmm, I'm trying to get Xpine up and running on Mac OS X. (Yes, I know one is Xwindows!) But I have not tried compiling Xwindows programs before. I followed the instructions in the Xpine INSTALL file.. However, I presume this is attempting to build on linux: (Step 9) Build the PINE(R) distribution (Ignore the link errors) eg: cd /usr/src/pine ./build slx Well, I'm presuming that only because of: Making Pico and Pilot make CC=cc -f makefile.lnx ... I almost have the composer finished, plus I'm getting frustrated with this TextEdit widget, which means it's time to release a new version.. ;) The positive side is that I'm writing this message in xP, so while the program is still in pre-alpha (meaning <50% of the code has been written), it does have the beginnings of a base-usable e-mail client. So if you signed up for an e-mail notification when the next installer is released, expect an e-mail soon. I'll post something to the list for those who aren't subscribed to the sourceforge file monitor. Take care, -bri P.S. I'm taking a screenshot of this xP compose message session so you can see what it looks like on http://xpine.sourceforge.net |

Maybe it works but we build up new Servers these days - so i have to hold this Version. Hi there, i have several problems with the compilation of xpine under Red Hat 7, kernel 2.2.11-19. Me use following tar's : pine4.10.tar.gz xclass.tar.gz xp-0.0.12.tar.gz (xp-0.0.13.tar.gz) When building pine, i received the following error mailindx.h not found ... okay, after copy this in /usr/src/pine4.10/pine this is solved. Several lines later there is bigger one : ln -s osdep/os-lnx.c os.c cc -g -DDEBUG -DLNX -DSYSTYPE=\"LNX\" -DMOUSE -c -o os.o os.c os.c: In function `fget_pos': os.c:1097: conversion to non-scalar type requested os.c:1098: invalid operands to binary == os.c: In function `fset_pos': os.c:1108: incompatible type for argument 2 of `fseek' make: *** [os.o] Fehler 1 That happens with gcc 2.96 I try to ignore this but then - when build xP distribution with ./bld ... well... there is the one or another errormessage ;-) I follow the "Installationguide" on the Hompepage, try this with using other paths, e.g. /usr/src/pine4.10/pine/whatever instead of /usr/src/pine4.10/whatever, read the FAQ, look in several Mailing- archives but .. it don't work. Now, after the 8th try i'll give up. Any Ideas ? so far Michael Weber |

I still haven't fixed my laptop, but a friend of mine with a dedicated connection has provided me space to return to my work on xP. That combined with a semester break in classes should provide me with a good opportunity to make some progress in the project. I'm in the process of porting it to the new XClass (v0.5.3), and to the new Pine (v4.31). Hopefully I'll have something for download soon. I just took a screenshot of my progress last night and put it up on the web. Take care, -bri |
