Pica8 is committed to providing open source solutions of L2/L3 switch software.

Switches, including high end routers, have long been a critical component in the infrastructure of all IT operation. Up to now, switches are all implemented as embedded and close systems. This close software model has built a high barrier of innovation to the router and switch products.

With the fast improvement of switching ASIC, the off-the-shelf switch chips, such as Broadcom, Marvell, and Fulcrum, have surpassed the performance and density of in-house designed chips from traditional switch system vendors, such as Cisco and Force10. However, we are still missing an open source switching software in order to drive these high performance ASIC.

Pica8 is committed to building high-quality open-source switch software, and working with white-box switch vendors, such as Pronto Systems, to achieve10 folds of performance/price compared to legacy embedded switches.

The Pica8 software will initially focus on the applications for the following markets.

  • High performance Computing (HPC)
  • Internet Data Centers (IDC)
  • Small and Medium Business (SMB)
