I've installed the standard package (the one linked from Apple's OsX downloads page. Not via fink) and everytime I launch XDarwin (from command line or the dock) it lasts about 2-5 seconds then quits for no reason. Any hints/ suggestions ?

If you are strarting it by calling XDarwin directly it dies because no clients are running I suspect. Try using 'startx -- -quartz' from the command line or double-clicking on the XDarwin application through the Finder.
