I would like a button or something that could suspend
the display so that it would make it nice when
traveling to cut down on battery use.

The "OK" or "CANCEL" button could reenable the display
like mplayer does.

i suggest you use the ligh&power settings (blank display
but not suspend).

it won't be added (soon), unless the settings in light&power is
found uncomfortable for many users

In addition make the dial still active for the controls for
volume and song skipping.

more over, this display cut off should be automatic after a
giver number of second, and should be re-enabled ONLY by
pressing a button for more than 2 seconds. Because actually,
using an applet to do that is not effficient as pressing a
button for any operation (volume up or down for exemple) re-
enable the display and touching any key re-enable it too (not
easy to put the zaurus in your pocket without touching any
key).
