Ah the irony... Just as I got done saying everything was fine with the
Jabber server, @home (now our area is Insight actually) had to pull some
tricks. I've had a static IP address up until this point, but they will
begin requiring DHCP on Feb 15th. This isn't a death knell for the Jabber,
but it could be. Here's the deal... The jabber will stay running as
always, and I've written a little script which posts the current IP address
to my UIUC web page (http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~jkalafut/ip.html). I
actually have the DHCP service running now and it fetched the same IP
address as before, so you guys are still fine. While I can't be sure, I'd
expect a possible change on or around the 15th, and then it should stay
steady for the most part. I've used some DHCP stuff before and it seems to
keep the IPs for active connections pretty stable. So, just a heads up...
If you get an error about not being able to connect, check the above web
page. If they actually end up changing the IPs frequently (which would
suck), then you may be hunting for another chat alternative since it will
become too much of pain.
