A quick update:  I spent several hours searching both last night but
couldn't find anything related.  This leads me to suspect there must be
something specific in XMLUnit's testcase and I'll try to distill a test
that is independent of XMLUnit before I make any more noise.

This make some time so people subscribed to the commits list (me) will
have to live with Gump's nagging for now.
