I'm confused about what you want. I thought you were asking for SVG =
output,
but now you say you want PDF?

The bitmaps were a "feature" of Cairo before Cairo 1.2.

I can't see a way to pass SVG images directly to a Cairo SVG surface =
so they
appear as SVG in the SVG output.
