It's not surprising that it didn't work when I took away the installed PangoPDF files. So I can now build PangoPDF in one go if I use a libgnomeprint that is linked against Pango, or in three steps if I use a libgnomeprint that is linked against PangoPDF. If only Pango had an official GNOME Print backend...
