One thing I haven't done yet is enable aspell support for the spell-check. On Linux this is straightforward, but the Windows side will take some work.

Thanks Thowen! I'm about halfway to a German translation and I was hoping to release it with 1.0.8.9 (pencilled in for next week). What would be incredibly helpful is if you could check that the translation is picked up automatically on German computers (and makes sense!).

I have been learning Cambodian and at one site I frequent (khmeros.info) there is considerable activity regarding translation of apps into that language.
Since my Cambodian is still very limited, I haven't participated in any of these projects. But looking into them has revealed a considerable body of tools meant for this purpose.
I hope that these translation efforts being discussed here can use .PO files and such so that the work the first translators do in identifying what something means and how it's used can then be utilized by those who come later.
And who knows, maybe I can get my Cambodian instructor to help me and I can help get a Khmer version of XCE going.
Yes, absolutely. I think nearly all open source projects use *.po message catalogs, and this program is no exception. I will send you an up-to-date message catalog separately so you can take a look.
Needless to say I would be delighted to add a Khmer interface! The French interface is ready and due to go out with 1.0.9.1 before the end of the week.

Gee, why not explore putting the translation of XCE as a project into Pootle? (http://pootle.wordforge.org/) That's the web portal for managing a translation project.*
You'd probably find lots more people who want to translate it into their language.
And I have to say, XCE is so terrific. I have been using TextPad for years and it's natural for me to go to it for simple editing not only because I know all the keyboard shortcuts but because I've customized so much of the program to work or look the way that I want. And right now XCE and TextPad are getting pretty much equal usage from me -- that says a lot about how good XCE is!
So I'm all in favor of getting XCE into lots of languages!
But I'll have to look at the message catalog before I can say anything about what I can do in Khmer. Fortunately, there is a large body of computer terms used in applications that is already translated and available. So I can definitely get it started by putting in the right terms for File, New, Open, Save, etc.
And when it's clear how far that gets, I can definitely seek help, from my teacher and from the forums at khmeros.info.

Pootle does sound very interesting, but then I'm aware that this is only a small project and translating the interface is quite time-consuming.
I also MUST find a way of using aspell in the spell check so I can take advantage of the many high-quality dictionaries available for aspell.
