This turns out to have been due to apparent corruption in the CVS -
there is a hint in the first error line, which should have referred
to xlattice.cvs.sf.net.

I checked out the cpp component again, hand-edited the
util/CVS/Entries file, and now have successfully committed cpp, httpd,
and cryptoserver.

That is, CVS at Sourceforge appears to be OK -- although the apparent
corruption is worrying.
