I have had this problem for a while, and I think I now know how it presents. I've researched for a bit and here is what I found: Machine: AMD 64 3200+, Sound Blaster Live! card OS: openSuse 10.2 (though I started having trouble since 10.0). Symptoms: Digital output is disabled in most cases (amarok or xine playing 2ch mp3, flacs; system notifications; aplay; web content). A few cases still work (xine playing ac3 files, 5.1ch dvds; aplay -Dplug:spdif). How to do it: Make a fresh install of openSuse 10.2. Select kde system and install, update. Delete everything xine (as it's too crippled to play anything useful) and install necessary software in order to compile xine (gcc, alsa-devel etc). Download and install xine-lib, xine-ui. Open xine and configure the sound output to "passthrough". Open a multichannel file (I used to do it with a DVD but I've found .ac3 files will do the work). From the terminal kill xine with ctrl-c. This will trigger the effects described above. After this, kmix will display some changes ("IEC958 Optical Raw" and "SBLive Analog/Digital Output Jack" are now enabled). Reverting this changes does not fix the problem. How to fix it: go to yast -> hardware and start the sound module (no need to make changes, it will fix the problem just by opening it). How to irrevocably break digital output: It appears that, if the above fix is not applied and the computer is shut down, there will be no possibility of restoring digital output again (or at least I haven't found a way), save for a complete reinstallation of the system. -- Well, this are my experiences, I hope it is fixable. At least I've learned how to fix it temporally but the reinstalls in the past have cost me a lot of time. I even opened a bug report in suse's bugzilla (# 195187) but I think this is the right place to do it. Thanks! ___________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
