I fixed it! i grabbed the athlon architectured rpm for kernel 249 from redhat/rawhide, and it now is smoother then a babies bottom! so just recompile the kernel, making sure you specify it as an athlon!!!

What video car do you have?
Also check that MTRR *is* enabled - look in /var/log/XFree86.0.log and
make sure that you don't have anything which looks like
(WW) NV(0): Failed to set up write-combining range (0xd0000000,0x2000000)
