However, when I try to play back an mpeg2 file I get this: XINE lib audio_alsa_out.c:155:(ao_open) ALSA Driver only supports AC3/stereo output modes at the moment Any tips on how to work around that problem? Can I force xine to downmix the sound to stereo? Thanks for your help, -Brad |

I want to add a bit to the HOWTO on reporting bugs/queries. I would like to have a template e-mail to fill in. This is my current idea. Do people think there sohould be other things? -- BEGIN TEMPLATE -- Version of Xine : System description (OS Version / Vendor, Processor, Video card, Sound hardware): What were you doing (e.g. playing a DVD, watching a VCD, etc.): If playing DVDs, were you using the CSS-enabled plugin?: Description of bug and a method which reproduces it: If using Xv output (hardware accelerated), output from 'xvinfo' command: (optional) If SegFault, output from gdb: -- END TEMPLATE -- -- Rich Wareham http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~rjw57/... ...sc/ -- Linux Software for the Cambridge University Smartcard ...xine/ -- Xine HOWTO |

If so, are you playing an encrypted DVD (in unsure, probably yes) and have you downloaded the encrypted DVD plugin. If you are getting loads of 'demux error ?? ?? ?? (should be 00 00 01!)' then you probably need the plugin (available from http://xine.cjb.net/) If this is not the problem, can you send the output from gdb? i.e [user@...]$ gdb `which xine` . . . gdb> run <command_line_parameters> . . I *finally* was able to get xine running (yay!). I can play files straight from a DVD (i.e. /mnt/cdrom/video_ts/vts_01_1.vob) but when I try to use the dvd setting, I get a seg fault. Anyone know why this is? (and, yes, I did make a link from cdrom to dvd) Thanks! |

Firstly Correct location for DVD input plugin (thanks James): http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~rjw57/xine/xine-dvdnav-0.5.0.alpha3.tar.gz ^^^^^ Notice the difference Secondly, a forward of an e-mail to James about some things we need in Xine for doing NAV. Guenter, is it OK for us to have a NAV decoder in Xine itself? Is that compatible with Xine's no-CSS / non-free DVD code strategy? (if indeed that is what it is). On Fri, 13 Jul 2001, James Courtier-Dutton wrote: > Nice work. I think It might be something to do the difference between what ogle thinks is the cell start block and the position libdvdread reads from. (IIRC, the cell start blocks stored in the IFO are offsets from the start of the IFO but libdvdread starts from the beginning of the title VOBs). > The libdvdread play_title piped into xine plays the cells perfectly, and the > Trinity Fight in the Matrix looks perfect. > But playing the same title with your plugin causes some of the wrong cells > to be sent to the demux. I agree with that, its just I didn't have time last night to implement the required stuff in Xine for this. If no-one has any objections I'll try to make the Xv output plugin support the mouse event stuff in input API v2. > We need to really think of what the best way for all this will be. > I think that we should have 2 methods. > 1) have a decoder plugin for nav. > 2) have the input plugin for nav. This is definately the way to go. The stuff implemented above was just a test to see how difficult parsing NAV packets is (not very :)). Its a simple matter to move the code to demux_mpeg_block.c and pass it to a NAV plugin. My initial suspicions were confirmed in that there is no PTS information in the NAV packets and so it may be useful (for sync purposes) to assign them the nominal PTS of the last demuxed video/audio block (maybe +1 so we get ordering correct). If no-one objects, I'm going to have a go at putting a little NAV decoder into Xine this evening and also (should I have time) move the SPU decoder stuff out of its own thread. > In both cases we would need some kind of API so that the input plugin can > talk to video out, and also the video_out can send commands to the Virtual > Machine. (Button presses etc.). I think generally that some sort of message passing system would be good rather than keep adding API calls. For example, the video out plugin could register istelf as wanting to receive 'MENU' messages and metronom could register itself as wanting to receive 'SYNC' messages. The NAV decoder could then simply send off messages as it decodes the NAV packets and the required plugins would listen. In this way, the NAV decoder doesn't need to /know/ what to do if a re-sync is necessary, it just sends out the message. Similarly the plugin could ask to receive 'MOUSE' events from the video window. Do you think this would be more understandable? > One problem is the demux buffer. Delaying what the input plugin sends, to > what is actually on the screen. This is why some sort of 'FLUSH' message would be good. With a straight API, each plugin (video, metronom, audio, etc) would have to be flushed in turn when we jumped but with the message passing system, each plugin could just listen for 'FLUSH' messages. > Have you got any ideas on a menu API ? Since the menu stuf is v. low bandwidth, I think it can be done with the message system. E.g. the NAV plugin might send the following messages: 'BEGIN MENU TRANSACTION (PTS = xxxx)' 'HIGHLIGHT DATA = (spu stream, colour, etc)' 'MENU BUTTON x1,y1,x2,y2 NUMBER xxx' . . . . 'END MENU TRANSACTION' Then when button number xxx is pressed, either the co-ordinate could be passed to to the NAV plugin, or the button number, whichever turns out to be more useful. This way, we can implement menus in the NAV decoder plugin but /also/ in any (non-DVD) input plugins since the menu creator simply needs to know how to pass messages rather than talk to a specific API. > I think the menu API should reside in the xine-engine directory. 1. Try Xine 0.4.3 - from xine.sourceforge.net 2. You'll need imlib-devel RPM to be installed. 3. If you want to play commercial DVD's - then get captain CSS - it's a very good DeCSS plugin (not included due to legal reasons). Anyone who can give the URL?
