I've found that on some DVD's you can just change to a different audio stream and get your volume back up quite a bit. For instance, on Austin Powers 2, I put the audio selection at 1 - Which I assume is 2 Ch stereo instead of 5.1, and it's much better. You nailed it right on the head. I spent about an hour last night adding a bunch of debug code to xine to figure out what was goign on, and it's only on downscale. You're also correct in that it's an Nvidia card. Do you know if it's their drivers, the card, or the standard XFree drivers? I've got a Voodoo3 3000, I may toss that in instead. I need to check to see if my oms is doing downscaling or running through the image resize function. If it's running through the resize function - i'm still getting full frame rate - so I'll try and port that over as a --enable-broken-downscale option or something cuz it'll probably nuke performance on lower end systems (this is a 1.2Ghz Athalon). Thanks for your help! Mike Siggi Langauf wrote: > Hi, > > On Wed, 21 Feb 2001, Michael R. Eckhoff wrote: > > >> Are there any patches to allow you to resize the window? Well, not quite true: The reason why the volume is so low is downmixing: The AC3 Sound on most DVDs unpacks to five separate Audio channels which have to be mixed to form a two channel (stereo) signal. This is basically done like this: left =3D (left front + 0.5 center + left surround) / 2.5 right =3D (right front + 0.5 center + right surround) / 2.5 We have tried to be a bit sloppy about the division, but when we divide by ,eg, 1.5 only, sound overdrives with some DVDs. So it's a trade-off between proper volume and sound quality (overdriving gives horrible crackling noises). However, we reduced the share of the surround channels, which gives slightly louder volume, but less surround effect with Dolby Surround decoders. This code used to be in libac3/downmix.c. However, it seemed to have vanished there (now done by rematrix.c? G=FCnter? Anyone??)=20 > Turn up the volume. Get an amp. That's about all you can do... For now, that's right... Maybe, we can add some compressor code (ie. low volume is amplified, or rather less extenuated). Anyone is welcome to help out here ;-) Regards, =09Siggi |

Aaaah. That's another problem: You're probly using an Nvidia card. Their drivers don't supprot downscaling, but you still can drag the window bigger (or buy a video-friendly Card like the ones from Matrox). > FYI, I am using the Xv plugin and both the stable version and the CVS as > of today (2/21). I thought this would be of interest to PPC xine folks. Thanks to the great work of Eric Windisch finding and correcting the problem with the "Invalid mantissa" errors during the ac3 audio decoding, I now have a fully functional xine for the first time on my G4, both audio and video. I just watched the beginning portion of my unencrypted Highlander DVD. The rough xine patch mentioned in the attached message is the patch to xine 0.3.6 that I submitted earlier to xine-user. This patch used the system real-time clock to provide the timing information for the audio output. Since the xine 0.4.0 code now uses the system real-time clock for both audio and video, I'm hoping that portion of my patch will no longer be necessary. Once 0.4.0 is released as a tar file, I'll try and spend some time cleaning up my patch and reworking it for use with 0.4.0. I am so happy to finally be able to watch (and listen to) my DVDs on my G4. Many thanks to Eric Windisch and the xine developers!!!!! -Bill ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Wed, 21 Feb 2001 01:31:51 -0500 (EST) From: Bill Fink <billfink@...> To: ewindisc@... Cc: livid-dev@... Subject: Re: Patch-fix for PowerPC in OMS Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I had been beating my head against the wall for quite a while now trying to figure out what was causing the "Invalid mantissa" errors during the ac3 audio decoding. I was actually working on getting xine (0.3.6) to work on PPC, which thanks to your patch and a rough xine patch I worked up earlier, does now work for both audio and video. I'll have to try out both oms and xine now, to compare their relative performance and functionality. -Bill P.S. The browse the mailing-lists link on the user support page is broken. It points to http://www.linuxvideo.org/devel/mailinglists.html, which is just a blank page. To get to the actual correct page, it is then necessary to strip out the "/devel" component, giving http://www.linuxvideo.org/mailinglists.html. > On Mon, 19 Feb 2001, Eric Windisch wrote: > > This patch fixes OMS for PowerPC processors. > > This took a few days to do, although it appears quite simple. Are there any patches to allow you to resize the window? Currently, the only video size I am able to get is 854x480 or some variation thereof - depending on the aspect ratio I choose. I'd really like to be able to get say, 65x38 or something that is watchable in a side window. If i resize the window, the actual playback video stays the same size (I just see less of it). FYI, I am using the Xv plugin and both the stable version and the CVS as of today (2/21). Thanks Mike |

I'd just like to know - can any of you suggest and/or recommend some technical documentation on the web where I might be able to learn more about (specifically) PCM, Dolby AC3, DTS... I am sadly ignorant about audio stuff and would like to redress this if possible. > Derrik Pates | Sysadmin, Douglas School| _ #linuxOS on EFnet Regarding the volume problem this thread was about earlier - I've found the same thing, but I've generally been able to deal with it by using gmix to turn the "Vol" and "Pcm" levels higher. Of course, then I need to turn things back down (either with the mixer or external volume control) when I've finished with the DVD, but oh well... :) Pete. -- http://cygnus.uwa.edu.au/~pete/ -- BEDEVERE: Oooooh! Some DVDs have plain PCM streams, I think (maybe not?). That has nothing to do with it tho - everything, once it's in your computer, is data - MP3, PCM, Dolby AC3, DTS, OggVorbis, or any other format - it just doesn't matter. It may just be that the recording level is a bit lower on DVD and [S]VCD discs. There's nothing (afaik) in AC3 audio encoding that inherently makes it quieter than any other format - and the MPEG audio in a [S]VCD isn't really dissimilar from MP3 audio. I'm using Linux 2.2.17 (Mandrake 7.2), on a 1Ghz Athlon, some generic Compaq DVD (came with my old machine), no hardware decode, XFree86 4.0.2, nVidia drivers 0.9-6, with a Gefore 256 DDR (Creative Annihilator Pro). The DVD starts working, but the video occasionally freezes or gets really choppy. Is there any other information I can give that would help debug this problem? I'm willing to do anything I know how (or can learn) to get these DVD's playing, they (along with Rourini Kenshin, which works fine in Xine, btw) are the only real reasons I have for watching DVD's right now. ^,^ Thanks, -- Sean Middleditch of AwesomePlay Productions, Inc. |

I can corroborate this report - PCM volume for DVDs is also very quiet on my SB AWE 64. What's the problem? I'm not sure if anyones noticed, but with my current set up, the sound volume of DVD's, is much lower then mp3 or CD playback at the same volume. Can anyone account for this anomoly? My soundcard is a SBLive Value, paired up with some Altec Lansing ATP3 speakers (very sexy). |

I get the exact same error messages as of 18/02/01, the cvs of 17/02/01 or earlier works fine. I checked multiple times clean install etc. all to no avail. I'm using SuSE7.1, xine 0.3.7 and 0.4.0cvs (upt to 17/02/01) worked flawlessly. Hope this helps track down the problem... Raphael |

I don't know which linux distro you use, but on RH and Debian, there're some *-devel packages, which are required to compile xine CVS version. Hi, I wonder if it is possible to use xine without the GUI controls, i.e. using only commandline? This is my situation: I have a low end pentium used as a set-top movie box for dvd/vcd/mpeg using a DXR3 decoder card. I have found a patch to use the dxr3[1] card, but I do not want to run X on the machine, because of the overhead of X on a low-memory machine. So, would it be hard to add command line controls to xine? My vision is to replace the gui with a function listening on a fifo pipe, where commands (play/pause/next/etc) are fed, which then could be controlled via scripts run by lirc. XMMS uses such a technique to control the player via the commandline. Please CC: me as I am not subscribed to the list. Regards, Stefan [1] http://www.kuroyi.net/xine/ |

Surprising. XVideo crashed Xine (and anything else that tried to use XVideo) with a SEGV right away on my machine with a V5. > P.S. For some silly reason I've refered to the Banshee > as Voodo2 in previous postings, when of course - it is > Voodo3! :-/ No, it's not that either. It's a closer relative of the Voodoo3, but the Voodoo3 was a different design. The Banshee was the "in-between" design - the red-headed, one-armed stepchild kept under the stairs. :) Derrik Pates | Sysadmin, Douglas School| _ #linuxOS on EFnet dpates@... | District (dsdk12.net) | | | and now OPN too!
