Hi all, I have a growing number of Debian bug reports about xine locking up with XFree86 4.3. Maybe they have added some internal lock that leads to a deadlock together with xine's locking? The video driver doesn't seem to make a difference (this occurs with both xshm and xv). Details can be found on http://bugs.debian.org/201633 Has anybody tried XFree86 4.3? Siggi |

Hi, I've also noticed this problem with xine CVS 2003-07-28 under X 4.3.0 on a Debian unstable box. I've not taken the time to dig deeper into it, but by increasing the nice-level of xine to above that of the X server, the symptom disappeared. Now I'm successfully running xine at nice-level -9 with the X server running at nice-level -10. /Svante ii libxine1 1-cvs20030728-1 ii libxine-dev 1-cvs20030728-1 ii xine-ui 0.9.21cvs20030728-1 ii xserver-xfree86 4.3.0-0ds4 ii xfree86-common 4.3.0-0ds4 ii xlibs 4.3.0-0ds4 On Thu, 31 Jul 2003 12:39:56 +0200 (CEST), Siggi Langauf <si...@us...> said: SL> Hi all, SL> I have a growing number of Debian bug reports about xine locking SL> up with XFree86 4.3. I am using the SuSE 8.2 packages of XFree 4.3.0 at least since April (that's when my current RPM was installed). No xine-related deadlocks so far. Did you experience any lockups while running xine? (yes/no) Which graphics card/driver are you using? (look for "Driver" in the "Device" section of your XFree86Config(-4) file) At which nice level is X running? ("top" shows that in the "NI" column) Thanks, Siggi |

System particulars: Dual 500 MHz G4 (PPC) 2.4.20-ben10 SMP kernel ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 PF/PRO AGP 4x TMDS (rev 0) XFree86-4.3.0-2.1c using ati driver libxine1-1_beta12-1/xine-ui-0.9.21-1 I don't do anything special with nice levels, so X and xine run with the default nice level of 0. Perhaps it could be an issue related to the processor speed. -Bill |

Note that the canonical way to enforce this is just setting an appropriate "Reply-To" header. (currently[1], our lists don't modify any header addresses, so it's at the senders discretion to set them at will). Of course, you can just leave that header out, if you don't really care about getting double answers... Cheers, Siggi [1] One might argue that at least for closed lists like -devel, the list software should try to direct answers back to the whole list, so if there's an overwhelming demand, we could set this up... |

In this particular kernel (2.4.21+lowlatency+preempt+preempt-win4lin) it among other things directly affects the sizes of the slices the xine tasks get. Empirically, on my system I have experienced less impact from other high loads during xine playback with a lower nice level. I have no idea if there is an actual connection between the nice level and the xine/X lockups though. I just have not (yet) experienced lockups with a higher nice level than the X server. >> P.S. No need to CC me on any follow-ups, I'm on the list. D.S SL> Note that the canonical way to enforce this is just setting an appropriate SL> "Reply-To" header. OK, fixed. Thanks for the hint. /Svante (*) It could probably be made less risky, e.g. by assigning CAP_SYS_NICE to the multimedia user instead of sudoing. |

Question is what kernel do they use ? If itis 2.4 without O(1) patches for me i never saw a lockups. Of kernel patched (ac or ck) it happend. I need to kill xine and restart after this it can start. But then if i close and try to start in 10 minutes again the same. Andrei. Siggi Langauf wrote: >Hi again, > >On Thu, 31 Jul 2003, Jeroen Asselman wrote: > > > >>For what it is worth. FWIW: I experience intermittent lockups with Debian kernel-source-2.4.21 (2.4.21-3) with applied patches kernel-patch-2.4-lowlatency (20030706-1) and kernel-patch-2.4-preempt (20030617-5) and /proc/sys/kernel/lowlatency set to 1. Under this configuration, I have seen the same behaviour as Andrei, i.e. restarting (at the same nice level) sometimes works without lockups. I have not tried any other kernel configuration with XFree 4.3. Other details are specified in other mails in this thread. /S "AL" == Andrei Lahun <a....@ed...> writes: AL> Question is what kernel do they use ?
