I originally contributed the libspucc closed caption decoder to the xine
project, but have been inactive since then, as things just worked. However,
starting in xine 1.1.3, closed captioning breaks. Nothing is displayed at
all, although the module registers and the DVD in question has captions. I
did some testing with the CVS head, and it turns out that if you compile
with --with-freetype and --with-fontconfig, closed captioning stops working.
I have not had the time yet to track this down further. Nothing has changed in
libspucc itself, so the problem seems to be someplace else. I plan to
concentrate on what happens to the handling of bitmapped fonts when freetype
is enabled, because CC depends on the included bitmapped cc and cci fonts. Do
any of you have hints on where specifically I could start looking for
interactions with freetype and/or fontconfig (e.g. osd.c)?
Also, would anyone object if I made subtitles.closedcaption.enabled a
beginner-level option, instead of the current expert-level default?
