If you are watching an anamorphic DVD, with subtitles, the subtitles get
squashed. Anamorphic should only squash the picture to letterbox ratio and
leave the subtitles alone.
This also means that in some cases the proper way to display the subtitles is
outside the picture area.
Seen on Noir from ADV. I also tried Gamera 3 and it does that too.

Not in general. xine should behave exactly like a widescreen TV, which
distorts the subtitles as well. The problem is that both xine and the
widescreen TV handle the anamorphic distortion _after_ the subpicture
is already blended onto the image.
If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
And the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
And the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
Then the socket packet pocket has an error to report!
