The language setting looks alright to me:

What do you mean with "the named locale is available" ?
The above error message

does not specify a specific locale (which I could check)?

In general, C and C++ seem to work fine under the installed gcc, and (at least
for C++) locales are working correctly.

(I didn't find a file "xitk_set_locale".)
