Hi, This is a very familiar problem for me, we had the same problem for my company. There is no open source metadata database, though if enough people are interested then it would probably make sense to start such a project and make it available for everybody. Musicbrainz had this dream/goal to have a database for all the media but there is no such things as a DVD database for now, well not open source or free. The different copyrights issue can be resolved in a clean way and not just by hacking Microsoft way of doing but would require a big community, I think wikipedia is a great example on how a community can work on releasing open source information. If enough people are interested then maybe something could be started and I would definitively join the effort.
