Newer versions of xine-ui use the tvtime deinterlacer post plugin with a 
LinearBlend as the default method. (good compromise between performance and 
quality)

Yes, the old (non-tvtime) way provided an algorithm called "greedy", which was 
adaptive, but I am sure tvtime has something similar.
