Hello: I have just spent some time looking at the xine broadcast feature in the newest xine-lib. It seems to work very well, however I had a question: Are there any plans to support udp multicast of video? I know xine is able to play multicast rtp sources, but I would like to see it be able to send them as well. Multicast has several benefits over the what appears to be TCP connection oriented method used in the latest xine-lib. For one thing, multicast scales much better than TCP streaming. In a TCP streaming environment, if you were to stream DVD video to 10 clients, you would need a server machine capable of sustaining 80-100 Mbit/sec network throughput, or worse for 100 clients, a Gigabit/sec. Multicast streaming would allow you to support thousands of clients with 8-10 Mbit/sec (1 stream) Consider it a feature request.... Rett Walters |
