0.9.8 is _really_ old. You should consider upgrading to a newer version, 
since noone of the xine team will remeber all the old bugs that were in 
there. (We only remember the new ones in the later versions ;)

Is /dev/cdrom a symbolic link to the device file of your CDROM drive?
Check with 'ls -l /dev/cdrom'.
