Wow! Thanks a lot! This was the problem! I just switched to "null" and 
"oss" audio output, and it worked perfectly.

So now the question is: why is esd fucking up thusly?

I have esound 0.2.28 installed, from Mandrake Cooker. Gonna try with 
other versions.
