OK of the opinion that this was successful, now the only thing which remains to be fixed is the selection of the background range to use - if this is more than say 5 degrees that's kind of overkill. For the moment though that is a useful reduction in the size of the code base.

OK have essentially just done this with the code hammer for revision 3354. testing now.
