XeTeX exhibits problems processing some macOS fonts (as of macOS 10.15 Catalina Public Beta):

  • Apple Color Emoji ("Apple Color Emoji.ttc" from /System/Library/Fonts) isn't displayed in the output. For HarfTeX, Khaled Hosny traced this back to a bug in HarfBuzz and fixed it

https://github.com/harfbuzz/harfbuzz/pull/1851

So maybe this is fixed in recent XeTeX builds already, using an up-to-date HarfBuzz. I've only access to XeTeX as shipped with TeX Live 2019.

  • GB18030 Bitmap (NISC18030.ttf from /System/Library/Fonts/Supplemental) isn't displayed in the output either. That said, no other TeX engine can deal with it either, so maybe there's nothing to do.

  • YuKyokasho Yoko and YuMincho +36p Kana (Kyokasho.ttc and YuMincho.ttc from /System/Library/AssetsV2/com_apple_MobileAsset_Font6) aren't displayed or with random glyphs. These are downloadable fonts, not installed by default, which the user can download in Font Book or an app can request and download in the background.

A systematic test of all macOS fonts with recent TeX engines (HarfTeX, LuaHBTeX, LuaTeX and XeTeX, plus a reference rendering using Apple's Pages) may be found at (37 MB, link valid for a month)

That's how I noticed the issues.
