A Cygwin user (https://www.cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2016-06/msg00197.html) reported the following error when running xelatex from TeX Live 2016 on the attached file:
xdvipdfmx:fatal: This font using the "seac" command for accented characters...
I found a post by Akira Kakuto (http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/296308/xelatex-setmainfontcmu-serif-produces-wrong-characters) that recommended hiding TeX Live's type1 fonts from fontconfig. This does indeed work around the problem. What puzzles me is that Akira attributed the problem to bugs in xdvipdfmx that have been fixed for TeX Live 2016. Is this a new bug, different from the ones Akira was talking about?

Type1 fonts as native fonts are almost useless.
They can be used only in cases with very simple
encodings. Please hide them from fontconfig.
