I have been trying to get assistance with a bug in convirtu, but it is impossible to do so: I signed up for the forums at http://www.convirture.com/forums/ (which took forever because the captcha is impossible to read, took literally 37 tries to finally signup). I received confirmation email, and now waiting on forum admin to approve. This was last month... I almost had my employer sold on this software, ready to buy it, and it is falling apart since it is impossible to get any support with a software bug with your available support options. What am I missing? Brian |

Hello, I need some information about ConVirt: - Does it's support Citrix XenServer 5.6, Oracle VM 2.2, RHEV 2.2 which are based on KVM and XEN hypervisor, if it's the case can ConVirt upgrage hypervisor with the web based console ? - Can It support public cloud such as EC2 ... and if its the case how or with which plugin ? - How many host server, vm, could be suported by ConVirt ? - How much memory and disk space does it need to handle an average infrastructure ? - ConVirt support alert and notification when a problem accur, but when a task or schedule task is finished notification are possible ? - Is it possible to update virtualisation platform with ConVirt such as update Xen 3.4 to 4.0 with Convirt ? thanks |

Guys Sorry for delayed response. Being not able to "move" the VMs out of the failed server is a bug in open source version. We are also working on providing automatic failover from a failed node, this will be available in the Enterprise edition. Please register for beta if you are interested. It seems to me like you are trying to do the same things as I am. In an 'ideal world' if a node dies, it should just automagically migrate the VMs to the other nodes (balanced of course) and flag up the error and create an action to replace the dead node This is something I've been having difficulty achieving using several similar projects.. was hoping that convirture would do it (seems to elude to it on the website) Is this extra functionality available in the Enterprise Beta perhaps? Signed up, waiting to hear back On a side note, just found out we have a Fibre Channel disk shelf and switch going begging.. so we could use that for storage, although how it'd handle the multipathing is beyond me at this stage Joel -- $ echo "kpfmAdpoofdufevq/dp/vl" | perl -pe 's/(.)/chr(ord($1)-1)/ge' |

Hi all I'm wondering about the HA aspect of convirture, let me list some failure cases; 1) A given VM host dies.. how do the VMs on that machine get migrated/failed over to other live VM hosts. 2) Convirture management node dies.. what are the HA options for this? I can achieve storage HA by using Openfiler, or DRBD replication / heartbeat of the storage node, so that's ok. Thanks! Joel -- $ echo "kpfmAdpoofdufevq/dp/vl" | perl -pe 's/(.)/chr(ord($1)-1)/ge' |

Hi list: I'm using convirt 2.0 + patch bundle 1 on a test environment: Debian "Lenny" with Xen for virtualization servers; paravirtualized guests and cLVM for shared storage. Since I already have production virtualization environment I started my tests importing the config files for some of our (at the moment unused) virtual guests. Import procedure went OK (more or less: there were some minor problems with regards of managing white spaces and/or multiline definitions, but nothing non-obvious). Once the definition imported, the info page for the virtual machine will show no info neither for "Guest OS" (which I quite of understand) nor for "Virtual CPUs" (I don't understand this one since it's right there, on the config). On the other hand, it seems non posible to properly "integrate" the imported config within "standard" convirt management tools: the "edit settings" option does nothing, so you are stuck with managing the guest by means of the "Edit Virtual Machine Config File", both suboptimal and misleading since the option *won't* edit the config file but the imported version within the convirt database. By the way, while understandable, the "import config file and manage it from the database from then on" seems a bit like burning your ships. Being that convirt is basically a "stateless" management tool (which I honour as being one of its strong points -while a bit more on the conciliation side between known state and reality would be quite worthy) it would be very interesting some kind of "export" button or script that would produce valid config files for the guests in case the user wants or needs to get free from the tool (i.e.: because a show-stopping bug, at least while the bug is resolved). Please pay attention that all this "virtualization trend" (which is here not to go away), specially with regards of their management tools, means "putting all your eggs in the same basket". As an example, I manage a "not even big" environment with 10 virtualization servers and about 200 virtual guests: a glitch on our management tools would literally mean taking the whole company to its knees (see, for instance my previous post about not being able to "move away" guests from failing servers) so sounded ingeneering principles and clear and safe "escape lanes" are paramount for our tool of choice (or else get along with our current heavy-on-management but strongly decoupled and easy to fail-proof tools and procedures). Cheers. |

Hi, list: I'm using convirt 2.0 + patch bundle 1 on a test environment: Debian "Lenny" with Xen for virtualization servers; paravirtualized guests and cLVM for shared storage. Within the management interface the virtualization servers appear with an "X" within a circle no matter if they are up or down (I'm using Iceweasel 3.0.6 for web browser) which seems either a bug or an interface inconsistence since virtual machines do offer either an "on" or "off" button depending on their known state. Is this a known issue? Cheers. |

Hi list: After following the install process for Convirt 2.0 community version (plus patch bundle 1 and some "glitches" with regards of me using a Debian "Lenny" server) my test enviro works more or less OK. But while it seems quite OK for a test environment it seems not so good for a production one. Some questions rise: 1) Is there any FAQ, Howto, etc. with regards of "properly" start convirt daemon-mode? i.e.: using apache plus mod_wsgi; not using paster with "development.ini"; not having such strong dependencies on environment variables but config entries, etc. 2) Install: current install procedures depend heavily on gaining access to the Internet and downloading quite a lot of Python modules which may or may not be reachable at the moment of installation, pushed forward to a new version, etc. all of this on its own tg2env which may or may not be shareable with other apps in the box. 3) Upgrade and promotion: is there any outlined protocol for proper upgrade? i.e.: upgrading from 0.x to 2.x is a matter of "start anew"; current patch policy is cummulative; what will happen when/if you produce a future "patch bundle 2"? will it be "pushable" on top of a patch bundle 1 + some patches? Will it be a proper migration path from 2.0 to a future 2.1? 4) Feature cutting: on previous releases command line access was avaliable while for 2.0, ACLs, command line and programmatic remote access (by means of XML-RPC) have been "pushed away" to the "enterprise version" (even more, it seems to be a 'post-facto' decision at the view of some "remainders" about ACLs and command line on current community code-base), which regreatably doesn't offer much confidence to us, third parties, in order to make a strong involvement with the tool: no one wants to be "locked in" with a tool less and less featured where more and more production-grade features move away to a pay-only (and not cheap, by the way) version. 5) End user/distribution license for "enterprise version". Is it known under what license will be the "enterprise version" distributed? By the fact that you ask for giving non-exclusive rights with any patch that any third-party could develop it seems obvious that you expect to distribute under a double-license model, more probably with the "enterprise versions" being under a closed one. Will this be the case? Don't you expect this to refrain third parties from sharing development with you? Cheers. |

Hi, list: I'm in the process of evaluating convirt (2.0 plus patch bundle 1) and, while for the most part it looks very promising there are some "nuisances". My environment is based on Xen over Debian "Lenny" virtualization servers (Dom0) and (mainly) Debian Lenny paravirtualizated guests (DomU) on cLVM for shared storage. We have n+1 Dom0's so in case of malfunction, maintenance stop, etc. we can always start the guests from the offending server on the spare one. Now: if I simulate malfunction of one of our Dom0's (pull the cord) and I try to "move away" by hand all its guests to our spare server the operation rises an error: "(113, No route to host)" so not only I lose the virt server and all its guests but there's no way to recover (except for direct mangling of the underlying database, I suppouse). Is this a known bug? Is it expected for this behaviour to change in future releases? A related issue is that once the Dom0 is recovered its depending guests won't "autostart" (of course, for this to work properly the starting server should "conciliate" which guests it's expected to turn on in order to avoid turning on the same guest on two servers at the time). Cheers. |

Hi all, I'm trying to configure convirt 2 with a storage (OpenFiler) iscsi. I'm following the steps in wiki ( http://www.convirture.com/wiki/index.php?title=Storage_Management). But I'm not having success. In the managed server I type the following commands: 230labvt44:~# iscsiadm -m node 10.1.128.168:3260,1 iqn.2006-01.com.openfiler:testeIscsi.de15f84e62ea 10.1.128.168:3260,1 iqn.2006-01.com.openfiler:e230labvt44.e165f2da0ef1 10.1.128.168:3260,1 iqn.2006-01.com.openfiler:230lbxen44.c562acce0486 230labvt44:~# iscsiadm -m session -P3 iSCSI Transport Class version 1.1-646 iscsiadm version 2.0-870 iscsiadm: No active sessions. 230labvt44:~# iscsiadm -m node --targetname "iqn.2006-01.com.openfiler:e230labvt44.e165f2da0ef1" --portal " 10.1.128.168:3260" --login Logging in to [iface: default, target: iqn.2006-01.com.openfiler:e230labvt44.e165f2da0ef1, portal: 10.1.128.168,3260] Login to [iface: default, target: iqn.2006-01.com.openfiler:e230labvt44.e165f2da0ef1, portal: 10.1.128.168,3260]: successful In convirt 2 I follow the steps: Data Center -> Manage Storage -> New: Type: Internet SCSI (iSCSI) Name: OpenFiler Description: OpenFiler Portal: (I try: "10.1.128.168,3260", "10.1.128.168:3260", "10.1.128.168 3260") Targe: iqn.2006-01.com.openfiler:e230labvt44.e165f2da0ef1 When I press the "scan" button only the message "Failure:" appears. The svn repository for 2.0 is not made available yet. I will do this as soon as some one in our team has some cycles. In the mean time if u need latest tar ball, let me know. /Jd --- On Tue, 5/18/10, Ronaldo C. A. Chaves <xa...@gm...> wrote: > From: Ronaldo C. A.
