I would prefer to go this route.  It seems like the cleaner option in  
the long run.

If you're willing to put a patch together for this, I'm happy to drop  
it into CVS.  I actually have a 64-bit machine available for  
development & testing, but time often gets in the way.  So I  
certainly appreciate any help you can provide in this area.
