#215 Outlook MSG email missing Date, From email, Header

No

I tried converting an Outlook MSG file, but the output
Xena file does not have the <email:header name="Date">
I was expecting. I see where the java code tries to
get this field. I'll try to debug this myself later.

Also, it's only getting part of the From address, just
the name and a backuote (`), but the email address is
missing. Maybe the backquote is confusing some part of
the parsing.

Another thing, that I don't even see accounted for in
the spec is the full header text or the other header
fields. In the example I tried, the To field is the
Outlook user, so the address is the Outlook value, not
an email address. Therefore, I'd like to parse the
header further to get the email address.

Thanks,
Mike

    Hi Mike,

Would it be possible for you to attach the .msg file you
normalised to this bug report? Then I can step through it
and see if I can address the problems.

I was able to normalise a couple of simple msg files using
    Xena lite 3.0

The <email:header name='Date"> was present as was the full
"from" address (ie "Fred Smith <Fred.Smith@example.org>")

Did you test with .msg files generated by the NAA Outlook? I have a feeling that this bug could be caused by different Outlook Servers using different date formats, and our code is hard-coded to use the NAA date format. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any other .msg files with which to test.

Yes, I used msg files generated on the NAA exchange server.

I asked a couple of mates in Customs and Defence to send me msg files from their own systems (_test\dpr testing\transfer data\disk145\)

The date header was missing from all the samples provided by them.

The only problem with the from address - for the copies of the message I sent out - was that it was in X500 format (/O=AUSTRALIAN ARCHIVES/OU=ARCHIVES/CN=RECIPIENTS/CN=JOHNL) rather than the 'normal' internet format (john.lovejoy@naa.gov.au ) - all other addresses were in the latter format. This probably isnt a fixable problem, but might confuse the casual user.

We are hoping to get specs for Microsoft file formats such as PST and MSG from Microsoft. It's unlikely there will be any more work on this bug until that happens.

Test Xena to see if MSG headers are still broken. Also, verify that the current version of LibPst works with the current version of outlook files.
