I think that's not needed (i.e. cruft). Simply double click
in the text field, and then type the replacement text
(Motif) or use Ctrl-W (Xaw, where you can also alternatively
use Ctrl-A Ctrl-K).

True (in Motif only; in Xaw, typing or erasing doesn't erase
the marked text, so AFAIK Ctrl-A Ctrl-K is the only
effective way to erase all the text in Xaw). The suggested
marking of the entire string may be useful for Motif.

Maybe, you could mark the whole string after searching by
default, as seen in LEO, for example. That would be enough.
