Newer versions of xdvi allow to cann xdvi without giving an argument. Using then "open recent" I switched to a previously looked at document - and xdvi crashed. This happened each time I tried. Maybe the reason is that the last time I looked at the last page of the document but the document shrunk in the meantime by one page. In any case, I send the bug report I got:

xdvi

I am unable to reproduce the bug.
Does the bug occur with newer versions of xdvi? Version 22.84.9 of xdvi dates back to late 2004 or early 2005.

Version 22.84.9 came with the newest version of slackware 14.2.
Therefore, I assumed that it was the newest version of xdvi, too. Maybe it
is worth ungrading xdvi and forget about the bug. Under usual conditions
      the bug does not occur.

      With kind regards, Stefan Groote

Hm... I see that slackware is using teTeX instead of TeX live. teTeX hasn't been updated in over ten years now. Here's a discussion that explains much of that situation:
        http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/tex-live-in-slackware-635217/
It also explains some alternatives that you might consider.

          Dear Paul,

Thank you so much! I already saw that it might not be so easy for me to
upgrade the version. Therefore I am glad that others have done work on Tex
live before. If I change to work on my desktop again, I will try to
replace teTeX by TeX live on my laptop.

          With kind regards, Stefan
