Attempts to display some international vowel characters
cause blinking text with strange characters in place of
those vowels.

This issue cannot be dealt with until we support l10n in the
Curses interface, if possible. Also, GDL files may need to
be converted to UTF-8 and read with a UTF-8-reading parser.
