This is implemented in the current version.
Go to preferences -> events/sounds
and tick the box in the 'g' column for the desired events.

I would like to request having separate events registered with Growl for each
type of event, so I can customize them individually. Also the option of not
displaying the message text.
To make this clearer I will describe what I am trying to achieve:
Channel activity: Dock indicator (fine as is)
Highlighted message: Sticky Growl showing message
User join: Non-sticky Growl showing <user> joined.
Private message: Growl saying new private msg but not showing the msg text
(after all it is private!)
So you can see the sort of customizability I am after. ATM all events have to
act the same.

0.15.2 seems to have Growl support.
The only problem is it has trouble with non-ASCII and
non-Unicode character encodings.
