need to be able to turn off xchat's frequent querying of the server for
the names and info of people in channels i'm currently in, so that i can
connect using multiple xchats at once to psybnc etc. otherwise i
constantly get flooded off with all that text coming in from the other
xchats. thanks.

I use ZNC and there is a plugin for ZNC that sends the WHO replies to the client that requested them only. Finding that plugin was a lifesaver because I have 2 or 3 xchats + androIRC connected at any given time.
