No SASL Support when using Verizon Mifi
Brought to you by:

I am using xChat version 2.8.8
When I attempt to connect to freenode server I get the following error:
"Notice -- You need to identify via SASL to use this server."
This problem only occurs when I'm using my Verizon Mobile Mifi. Here a link that describes the issue:
http://blog.gnu-designs.com/howto-configure-tor-sasl-irc-to-connect-to-freenode/
None of the fixes described in the link above work for me. Colloquy had a similar issue and now has an update to offer SASL support. I'm hoping there can be a similar fix for xChat since I don't use Colloquy. http://colloquy.info/project/ticket/2590
If you are running the Ubuntu(possibly Debian as well) patched version of xchat you need http://lwsitu.com/xchat/cap_sasl_xchat.pl which includes a workaround for problems caused by the patches instead of the plugin mentioned in that post.
Usage is a bit different:
/sasl set <net> <user> <passord> PLAIN
/sasl save
<net> should be the name you have for FreeNode in the Network List (ctrl+s)
