Not the one to state about official support, but xcat should work with rhel9. We have it working in several places and I know the xcat team added this support few months ago.

I just meant more than anything, certainly support for a new OS is not going to be added if it’s not already there, if the last release was announced (unless it just worked with a minor tweak).

yes, EL9 distros are working mostly fine.
Officially EL9 is in alpha state right now. See: https://github.com/xcat2/xcat-core/wiki/XCAT_2.16.5_Release_Notes
The next release will most probably move this to the next level, but it will take some more time. Please bear with us.

Some special configs like nics.nicextraparms etc. do not work (because ifcfg is deprecated and nicextraparams is not using nmcli yet).
But otherwise, management node installation and stateless/stateful node deployment is working fine.

Has that been truly decided? There was a group working on taking over 
going forward. The original xCAT team at IBM was moving on, that part 
was happening. But there were some folks that stepped up to work towards 
continuing. Right?

We just haven’t heard from them for a while.

Hi Blake,
You are correct!  A consortium been formed and we are working with IBM regularly while simultaneously working through the operational, organization and legal aspects needed for 3 independent companies to take on this project.  We could certainly do a better job of communicating more frequently. However, we are just coming out of the holiday season.  A quick update on what we’ve been doing, our focus recently has been to understand how IBM manages testing.  We are in the process of setting up the test infrastructure and will be working on that for the next few weeks.  We should have a more formal update soon.

We, xCAT consortium, are working on various activities in the background to be able to maintain xCAT fully. We have introduced a new milestone of xCAT 2.17 that will be our first maintenance release. The main objective of this release is to move RHEL9 and directly derived operating systems (Rocky, Alma, Oracle) into officially supported by xCAT.

RHEL9 support is being worked on under https://github.com/xcat2/xcat-core/issues/7416. RHEL9 has been reliably deployed from xCAT but there are a couple of known bugs with workarounds we plan to fix. This week we have been merging several PRs relating to RHEL9 and some other useful low hanging fruit sort of fixes.

A full announcement will be made when all our testing is completed and we are ready to release 2.17.

Hi Gilad,

There are no immediate plans for arm. Our focus will be primarily on x86 whilst we are in a transitional state and clearing some of the backlogged issues. After we have fully established the maintenance of project, we will be determining what a longer-term roadmap looks like and how we plan to further develop xCAT.

We, xCAT consortium, are working on various activities in the background to be able to maintain xCAT fully. We have introduced a new milestone of xCAT 2.17 that will be our first maintenance release. The main objective of this release is to move RHEL9 and directly derived operating systems (Rocky, Alma, Oracle) into officially supported by xCAT.

RHEL9 support is being worked on under https://github.com/xcat2/xcat-core/issues/7416. RHEL9 has been reliably deployed from xCAT but there are a couple of known bugs with workarounds we plan to fix. This week we have been merging several PRs relating to RHEL9 and some other useful low hanging fruit sort of fixes.

A full announcement will be made when all our testing is completed and we are ready to release 2.17.

If you have workarounds you are already using it’ll be best to open an issue on Github at https://github.com/xcat2/xcat-core/issues detailing the issues and proposed workarounds. We have a couple postscripts to deal with rhel9 NetworkManager/ nmcli
1) static Ethernet config to allow diskless node to avoid need to renew dhcp lease
2) static IPoIB config on first interface with link Up
3) script to establish second IB pkey interface and give it a dhcp address
They are not polished and perhaps not able to work in all situations.

I have not found a solution  to (3) for a disked node, not sure how to tell nmcli to echo 0xnnnn > create_child automatically to generate the new ib0@nnnn interface.
It’s fine for a diskless node because it has to be created each boot anyway.
But I need to fix the head node to bring up the pkey partition before starting dhcpd.
Let me know the best way to share the work we’ve done.

with https://github.com/xcat2/xcat-core/pull/7257 arm deployment is pretty much working for stateless and stateful deployment via grub2.
On a x86 management node you can even cross-build arm stateless images.
Only discovery doesn't work for arm.

Feel free to test these changes.
I would like to merge these changes as alpha state arm support. I think stateless and stateful deployment covers 90% of use cases already 😉

There are no immediate plans for arm. Our focus will be primarily on x86 whilst we are in a transitional state and clearing some of the backlogged issues. After we have fully established the maintenance of project, we will be determining what a longer-term roadmap looks like and how we plan to further develop xCAT.

We, xCAT consortium, are working on various activities in the background to be able to maintain xCAT fully. We have introduced a new milestone of xCAT 2.17 that will be our first maintenance release. The main objective of this release is to move RHEL9 and directly derived operating systems (Rocky, Alma, Oracle) into officially supported by xCAT.

RHEL9 support is being worked on under https://github.com/xcat2/xcat-core/issues/7416. RHEL9 has been reliably deployed from xCAT but there are a couple of known bugs with workarounds we plan to fix. This week we have been merging several PRs relating to RHEL9 and some other useful low hanging fruit sort of fixes.

A full announcement will be made when all our testing is completed and we are ready to release 2.17.

Hi Gilad,

There are no immediate plans for arm. Our focus will be primarily on x86 whilst we are in a transitional state and clearing some of the backlogged issues. After we have fully established the maintenance of project, we will be determining what a longer-term roadmap looks like and how we plan to further develop xCAT.

We, xCAT consortium, are working on various activities in the background to be able to maintain xCAT fully. We have introduced a new milestone of xCAT 2.17 that will be our first maintenance release. The main objective of this release is to move RHEL9 and directly derived operating systems (Rocky, Alma, Oracle) into officially supported by xCAT.

RHEL9 support is being worked on under https://github.com/xcat2/xcat-core/issues/7416. RHEL9 has been reliably deployed from xCAT but there are a couple of known bugs with workarounds we plan to fix. This week we have been merging several PRs relating to RHEL9 and some other useful low hanging fruit sort of fixes.

A full announcement will be made when all our testing is completed and we are ready to release 2.17.
