I know there's already a Kubuntu request out there, but I'd much rather have this based on MEPIS. MEPIS is much more friendly to newbies with claimed best hardware support of any distro. Indeed, their software works perfectly (or did last time I tried) on my machine with no configuration.

yes mepis or simpleMepis is a better choice than normal kubuntu. It could even be based on linuxmint kde edition.

    hi,
I used Mepis also. Mepis is better than Ubuntu and Ubuntu or anything from that branch it's not near as good as any rpm packaged distro. Mepis went back to what they were doing before teaming with Ubuntu. Yes Ubuntu got alot of help from Warren(mepis owner/developer)I always thought Debian based was King! thats all I heard and read, so I had to find out for myself, which Distro is the most solid to use. I will say, I never tried Fedora, I have tried Vixta and it has a ways to go. I think the idea of using themes that look like windows are great. It will help newbie users to relaxes under linux. I use MCN live and it hands down beat any Debian distro. I tried over 50 different distro's and as of today, MCN live beats them all. I suggest using MCNlive's base since it's already uses the same package manager as Fedora. I think all your worries will be over and you can focus on getting your themes working perfect.

Being very familiar with Mepis, and like it much. But, it won't boot the Compaq Presario 5310US Tower. Have a lab with dozens of machines which I use to test Distros before doing public demos and handing out free LiveCDs. Some brands are a bit stubborn due to
    the hardware on the mainboard.

Vixta does boot the Compaq Presario 5310 Tower, with 1.2Ghz Celeron, 384MB RAM, and the onboard video. The only other LiveCDrom that has booted properly is PC-BSD. Neither Vixta nor PC-BSD offer the kind of complete Synaptic updates that is in Mepis.

Wanting a DVD with a fairly large repository of files, I might remaster the offered DVD myself.

So, I desire a Synaptic style update system, but, run Fedora 7 on 40 school workstations, so am willing to live with the foibles of it's application update system. Perhaps the DVD repository system of Debian might work, though there might be some kinks to fix.

I think Mandrive Spring 2008 has moved on even firther now. It is the ONLY distro to correctly detect and set up the Atheros 5006 wireless card in my Toshiba laptop.

Since I made my other reply about this. MCNlive has stopped new builds, I really think their base is the way to go, since you use RPM. There is a new distro on the market, that has the windows theme called Famelix . It's debian based and runs very well, I tried it, but I just can't get away from RPM, it's just too easy for me to update or add new apps.
    thanks for reading
