Vixta based on KDE is nice & convincing but somehow not very impressive. How about Vixta based on Gnome, think it'll push just that little to break through that "look-a-like" into "super-cool"...
gnome would be pointless due to the layout of the panels as gnome has the menu panel up the top and doesnt use a single menu button, and as such will not be able to recreate the start button. the idea of vixta is to look similar to vista, not exact, but similar. Gnome would throw that concept off.

GTK is heading to support transparency (see screenshots in http://arstechnica.com/journals/linux.ars/2007/12/12/gnome-theme-engine-designer-adds-transparency-to-gtk). The question is to adapt the design of the windows (widgets, buttons, etc...) to make it look as good as Vista. All the Vista-like GTK themes I saw until now were quite ugly in comparison to Vista...

you can customize the gnome bar to be anywhere you like
