What was the reason of the removal of advanced options?

One of the main point why I choose vfw is because I don't want to use command-
line at all and I want to do everything directly in one step.

ale5000, masternobody is too lazy to add back advanced options... try to use komisar's builds ]:->

He said that there was a reason, I just want to know what was.

@komisar: Can you add the output to file, the "Preset" and "Tuning" of this
    build in your build, please?

When I look at x264vfw config in VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.2, all I see is:

which is very simple, but I'm sure I'm missing something??

Oops, what I meant is, In the above config interface there are maybe 10
settings to make but in guides I have read, there are five or ten times that
many. Surely most settings do not need to be made using the "Extra command-
    line"?

These settings are removed in the normal x264vfw build and only usable with
"Extra command-line", if you want them in the graphical interface you have to
    use the Komisar builds.

Downloaded and tried to install x264.1677kMod.generic.x86.exe 5,581,312 bytes
but it quits immediately after starting, any idea why?

    because x264.1677kMod.generic.x86.exe is CLI-version...

    DOH!.

Does x264vfw.1666kMod.generic.x86.exe contain a decoder component or is it
    encoder only?

Is there any standalone (i.e. not ffdshow or other bundle) H.264 decoder
(apart from DivX Magnolia) that anyone would recommend and where can I DL it?

    thanx

x264vfw.1666kMod.generic.x86.exe compiled with internal decoder (ffmpeg)

Even the non-Komisar builds say they have the FFmpeg decoder so why can't I
get them to decode H.264/x264 content in MKV on Zoom Player 7 (Haali splitter
    installed)?

vfw should be used for encoding/decoding only in video editing applications,
altough they can also be used for normal playing it isn't suggested doing
    this, use ffdshow-tryouts for that.
