The concurrency and scale-out era is upon us. Application programmers
need to confront the architectural challenge of multiples cores and
accelerators, clusters and supercomputers. A central need is the
development of a usable programming model that can address these
challenges -- deal with thousands of cores and peta-bytes of data.
The open-source X10 programming language (http://x10-lang.org) is
designed to address these twin challenges of productivity and
performance. It is organized around four basic principles of
asynchrony, locality, atomicity and order, developed on a type-safe,
class-based, object-oriented foundation. This foundation is robust
enough to support fine-grained concurrency, Cilk-style fork-join
programming, GPU programming, SPMD computations, phased computations,
active messaging, MPI-style communicators, cluster programming. X10
implementations are available on Power and x86 clusters, on Linux,
AIX, MacOS, Cygwin and Windows.
The X10 Workshop is intended as a forum for X10 programmers,
developers, researchers and educators. The program may include
presentation of invited and selected papers, panels and a late evening
X10 hackathon with programming challenges and prizes.
Original papers are invited on all aspects of X10, including theory,
design, implementation, practice, curriculum development and
experience, applications and tools. Accepted authors will have the
option of having their paper in the proceedings that will be published by
the ACM.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
Submissions may not exceed 10 pages formatted according to the ACM
proceedings format. These 10 pages include everything (i.e., it is the
total length of the paper). Templates for ACM format are available for
Word Perfect, Microsoft Word, and LaTeX at
http://www.acm.org/sigs/sigplan/authorInformation.htm (use the 9 pt
template). Submissions should be in PDF and printable on US Letter and
A4 sized paper.
Papers must describe unpublished work that is not currently submitted
for publication elsewhere, including journals and proceedings of
refereed conferences and workshops (c.f.,

accepted papers will have the option of having their paper published

We are happy to announce that there will be a 1-day workshop focusing on
X10 on Saturday, June 4, collocated with PLDI'11. We are in the process
of getting ACM SIGPLAN sponsorship, but that is not yet closed. Since the

A4 sized paper.
Papers must describe unpublished work that is not currently submitted
for publication elsewhere, including journals and proceedings of
refereed conferences and workshops (c.f.,
http://www.acm.org/sigs/sigplan/republicationpolicy.htm). Authors of
accepted papers will have the option of having their paper published
in the proceedings. Such authors will be required to sign an ACM
copyright release, pending ACM sponsorship
Submissions will be reviewed by the program committee and designated
reviewers, and judged on scientific merit, innovation, readability,
and relevance. Papers previously published or already being reviewed
by another conference are not eligible; if a closely related paper has
been submitted to a journal, the authors must notify the program chair
(see the SIGPLAN republication policy).

1. X10 Release 2.0.4 (x10-lang.org)
This release includes both the C++ and Java code generation backends. There
has been a very significant improvement in the performance of the code
generated by the Java backend. Since 2.0.3 performance of an X10 port of
the jBYTEmark benchmarks has improved by 10x.
The standalone (single machine) version of X10RT now supports multi-place
execution by setting the environment variable X10RT_STANDALONE_NUMPLACES to
indicate the number of places that should be used to run the program. A
separate process will be created for each place and they will communicate
via shared memory.
No significant language changes were made since the 2.0.3 release. For
details on any minor language changes, please consult the language
specification included in the X10 release.
The release also includes X10DT 2.0.4 with the following enhancements: C++
back-end support, remote build/launch support, new compiler options exposed
through preferences, improved “content assist”, better front-end behavior
w.r.t. syntactic/semantic errors, more robust builder, more accurate
dependency information for incremental builds, and miscellaneous bug fixes.

2. Workshop on Concurrency for the Application Programmer
Held in conjunction with SPLASH'10, Oct. 17-21, Reno, Nevada.

Forced by architectural and commercial considerations, programmers now have
to confront multi-core systems, heterogeneity, clusters, clouds. What does
this revolution mean for the application programmer, typically removed from
the hardware through many layers of middle...-ware (often on top of managed
run-time environments)? How should the capabilities of heterogeneous
processors (including GPUs, FPGAs, streaming processors) and heterogeneous
memory (including non-coherent memory) be made available to the application
programmer? Should abstractions for the application programmer focus
primarily on application-level concurrency rather than implementation-level
concurrency? Should application-level concurrency abstractions be
fundamentally determinate? Fundamentally declarative? Resilient in the face
of node- and network- failure? How can high-performance concurrent programs
be written in garbage-collected languages? How can they not* be written in
garbage-collected languages? This workshop aims to bring together
practitioners and thinkers to address all topics around concurrency for the
application programmer.
This is a one day workshop at SPLASH'10. We intend to try to keep the
workshop small (ideally, between 20 - 40 participants). Participants are
expected to have significant experience developing either applications, or
concurrent application frameworks (e.g.{} Hadoop, data-streaming languages)
or domain-specific languages, or tooling for application programmers.
Potential participants are requested to submit either 10-page technical
papers or 3-page position papers (dates and submission address to follow).
The Program Committee (see below) will help us choose from the selected
submissions. Participation in the workshop will be through invitations and
on the basis of submissions. Accepted papers will be posted at this website
in advance of the meeting, thereby offering a chance for participants to
read each others' papers and be prepared for a more meaningful discussion.

3. Workshop on Curricula in Concurrency and Parallelism

The concurrency era has exploded on us. Multicore systems are now
everywhere -- in our laptops, desktops, graphic cards, video game consoles.
Symmetric multi-processors and clusters dominate the server and high
performance computing market and are the foundation for cloud computing.
There is an urgent need to ensure that newly trained Computer Science
graduates are well versed in the principles and practice of concurrent and
parallel programming. Following a previous successful first workshop on he
topic at OOPLSA 2009, this workshop will address several fundamental
questions:
What are the ``fundamental ideas'' of concurrency and parallelism that
every Computer Science graduate should know? That every college
graduate should know?
Should concurrency and parallelism be taught ``top-down'' (via
high-level abstractions such as operations on collections) or bottom
up (with low-level tools such as threads and locks)?
Should sequential programming be taught as a ``special case'' of
concurrent and parallel programming?
Should concurrency and parallelism issues be addressed in introductory
computer science courses?
Should concurrency and parallelism topics be ``sprinkled'' in existing
courses (e.g. in architecture, systems, programming languages,
algorithms) -- if so which topics in those courses should be taken
out to make room? Should these topics be taught in their own separate
stream?
This workshop aims to bring together practitioners and thinkers to address
this topic. We seek a diverse group of participants -- educators,
researchers, practitioners, students, authors -- with varied background,
experience and approaches, for what we hope will be a stimulating
discussion. It will be organized around the presentation of position papers
selected by the PC, and a panel discussion. The results of the workshop
will be made available online.
Potential participants are invited to submit 2-page position papers
addressing these topics, for consideration by the Program Committee. The
paper should address the authors' experience and thoughts on this topic,
and raise questions that they would like to see discussed at the workshop.
In the case of educators we are particularly interested in understanding
how your academic department is organizing as a whole to address these
pedagogical issues.

We're happy to announce that X10 version 2.0.3 is now available for download. This release contains a number of bug fixes and improvements to the code base. For more details, please see the X10 2.0.3 release page at http://x10-lang.org/X10+2.0.3+Release. A 2.0.3 release of X10DT is expected the middle of next week. The X10 2.0.3 Release Notes are appended. This release includes both the C++ and Java code generation backends. The following significant language changes were made since the 2.0.2 release: - To simplify the initial development of X10 programs, we have enhanced the compiler to automatically insert dynamic checks when it is unable to statically verify that type constraints of an invoked method are satisfied. The most obvious manifestation of this feature is with place types, where the compiler will automatically insert a dynamic place check when a non-global method is being invoked on a receiver object that is not known statically to be in the current place. By default, the compiler will insert the dynamic checks and report a summary of the total number of such checks inserted in each file compiled. Two command line arguments are available to modify this behavior: -VERBOSE_CALLS : verbose messages when dynamic checks are inserted -STATIC_CALLS : do not insert dynamic checks and instead treat non-entailment as a compilation error (the default behavior of X10 2.0.2). The intent is that programmers will initially develop with the default settings, but as the code matures, -VERBOSE_CALLS can be used to reduce the number of dynamic checks and in production-level code, -STATIC_CALLS can be used to take full advantage of the static type systems ability to verify static properties of the code. - There have been significant design changes and performance improvements in the x10.array class library. -- Array, Dist, Region, and Point have all been moved into the x10.array package. -- The x10.array package is imported by default (same as x10.lang). -- We have separated single place and multi-place arrays. x10.array.Array is a local (single place) array. x10.array.DistArray is a distributed (multi-place) array. -- x10.array.Array is defined over a Region and no longer has a Dist. -- x10.array.DistArray continues to have a Dist. -- Enhancements to the compiler and to the structure of the Array implementation have significantly improved the performance of Array. -- We have removed some of the more complex Dist and Region operations. In X10 2.0.4 (early June) we will be focusing on improving the performance of DistArray. In X10 2.1.0 (late July) we will be bringing back higher performance versions of additional Dist and Region operations. - We have enhanced the mechanisms used to integrate X10 code with native C/C++ libraries. Details can be found on this web page: http://x10-lang.org/NativeCodeIntegration. If you have code using the X10 2.0.2 @NativeRep annotation, you will need to add a @NativeCPPCompilationUnit annotation as well. For details on these and other more minor changes, please consult the language specification included in the X10 release. To make sure you have all the X10 help you need for your project, we assigned a contact from the X10 team to each project. If your contact hasn't already contacted you, he or she, will probably do so soon. X10 Innovation Awards mailing list: We set up a mailing list x10...@li... that includes all x10 innovation award recipients and the X10 team contacts. Please use this mailing list, if you would like to send email with news. announcements of questions to the entire innovation awards community. X10 Innovation Awards Wiki Page: We would like to use the Innovation Awards page to document the work in the program. Thus, we would like to add more contents for each award project, initially maybe just a paragraph describing a bit more detail and later on expanding to contain results or links to results.
