Hum... I fear this is a nasty issue on the mac (cannot reproduce it here...).
Can you press the 't' key,  this should go into trackball mode, and
you'll be able to interact a little more smoothly with the cone.

If the previous comment does not work, I think you are suffering from
the 'Rez' issue.
