I did it like this:
 
main = start gui

gui = do
  tv <- treeCtrl sw [style :~ (wxTR_EDIT_LABELS .+.)]
  set tv [ on treeEvent  := handleTreeEvent tv ]

handleTreeEvent :: TreeCtrl () -> EventTree -> IO ()
handleTreeEvent tv event =
  case event of
  TreeEndLabelEdit treeItem newLabel cancelled veto | not cancelled ->
... -- process event
  _ -> propagateEvent
