I have taken a look at wxFruit with wxhaskell.  Without the Unicode
patch, I get mostly the same symptoms:

The only thing is that I don't get the dynamic events warning, but=20
this is because I used wxWidgets 2.6.1.

In either case, it seems the problem is not related to Unicode stuff,
but to something else in wxWidgets.

P.S: In case it gets released, please disregard my call for testing wxFruit
