I'll also add that a past me tried to look into this around April,
but lost steam (and now I've forgotten most of the stuff the past
me worked out), so maybe this thread on the mailing list will help

I also recall the past me thinking that pkg-config would be really
handy here, but then later finding out that actually it's not quite
what we need.  I thought it was something we discussed on list too
