Also, I was thinking that we could start writing some SWIG wrappers to
replace wxc, but I guess that wouldn't really be very interesting for
a SOC student.

That's ok; you can supply the brains, and I can supply the English.  I
don't think I could give any time thinking about things, but I could
help you smooth out the communication end of things.
