How reproducible is this? I can download from DC++ 0.698 fine.
Have you tried restarting valknut when this happens?
Are you in active or passive mode?
Can you run valknut with -v from a terminal and paste the console output when this happens?

Usually I can't download an userlist from client dc++ 0.698:

    no chunk for userlists
    user is online on:
'La TeRRa Dei LoL «ÏSSNetwork» - AUGURI DI BUON ANNO :) - No reg' '213.251.177.115:443'
ATR: '[EU]__G.share__' '(null)' 'La TeRRa Dei LoL «ÏSSNetwork» - AUGURI DI BUON ANNO :) - No reg' '213.251.177.115:443'
    ATR COUNT: 1
    ATR ADD
    CListenManager: incoming connection 15
    CWT: '[EU]__G.share__' on '(null)'
    CWT: Create new TransferBanObject '*************'
    CWT: Banlist count 2 objects
UWT: Search user in the waitlist
    UWT: User found
CWT: CheckWaitTransfer II: [EU]__G.share__ on La TeRRa Dei LoL «ÏSSNetwork» - AUGURI DI BUON ANNO :) - No reg
    CWT: Set transfer NICK: 'netcelli@gentoo'
CWT: Waiting: [EU]__G.share__ on La TeRRa Dei LoL «ÏSSNetwork» - AUGURI DI BUON ANNO :) - No reg 213.251.177.115:443
    CWT: wait found ...
    LOCK 1 0 698
    WARNING: unknown data ! [87 128]
    dctransfer unknown message: 7

This msg in Log Tab of the GUI:

    LOGFILE [10:36:48] [[EU]__G.share__] Client: DC++ (0.698)
    [10:37:44] Incoming connection from '*************:57802'
    [10:37:45] [[HUN]attrium] Client: DC++ (0.698)
    [10:37:50] [[EU]__G.share__] Disconnected from *************:1429

If valknut succeed to download an userlist, I try to download a file; this is the output:

    LOCK 1 0 698
DIRECTION: level: LOCAL: 25807 REMOTE: 21836
DIRECTION: direc: LOCAL: 2 REMOTE: 1
    DIRECTION: download mode ...
    set file: 'SHARE\Games\SuperMario_4_Windows.rar'
    DEBUG: file: '/home/netcelli/Scaricati/SuperMario_4_Windows.rar'
    DEBUG: path: '/home/netcelli/Scaricati'
    DOWNLOAD: 'SHARE\Games\SuperMario_4_Windows.rar' 4797170 '/home/netcelli/Scaricati/SuperMario_4_Windows.rar'
create the hash for the file

See the attachment to see what happen in the GUI

    Then the connection is lost:

    [10:43:16] [[HUN]attrium] Disconnected from *************:39370

    Or another example:

    [10:52:46] [abby] Busy
    [10:52:46] [abby] Disconnected from *************:1431

    Two points to note:
Are you sure you're running latest dclib? Problems with multi download mode not working should have been fixed on 30/10/2006.

Can you try and find out what the "WARNING: unknown data ! [87 128]" is, by either running valknut with "--socketlog both" or by using wireshark (formerly ethereal)? Pay particular attention to what is sent after "$Lock". Also, it is possible that they are running some mod of dc++ which may have extra issues?

I've attached an example of what a successful filelist transfer from dc++ 0.698 should look like.
    File Added: dcsocket-success.log

    Thank you for your help
