I know what you mean: when after lot of work I fix/develop something new 
in my code, I'm always happy to send it to the SVN/CVS server: I feel 
safer when I know that a copy is now on the server, too ;)

Thanks again for your help Francesco.
i got the CVSNT service up & running, but then i read about SVN and its 
advantages over CVS, so being the curious guy i am... i removed CVSNT 
(and my client), and i configured a SVN server on my LAN server, and 
tortoise SVN (client) on my workstations. :-)

BTW:  will i be able to use SVN to mantain my component on wxCode? (does 
wxCode supports SVN?) of so, can you please provide me with the uri?

P.S. Thank you very much for sugesting / introducing me to Version 
Control,  now that ibe learned to use it, and what i can do with it, i 
dont know how i managed to live till now without it :-)

BTW, now that ibe discovered the potential of CVS, i want my own server! 
:) , and since i have my own LAN, there shouldnt be much trouble, except 
that since none of my PCs has linux, i need a CVS server for windows, i 
heard about CVSNT but. i been trying for hours to go to www.cvsnt.org to 
get the server for windows, but the site seems as dead as julius cesar! 
:) firefox cant even resolve the address for it.
anyone knows if the site is down? if so, can someone please direct me to 
somewhere where i can download the latest stable release of CVSNT (for 
windows)? ibe goggled, yahooed, etc for a download link with no luck.

When I took over responsibility of wxCode it was mostly to allow anybody 
to release useful code without being dependent on the wxWidgets core 
team if the code is accepted or not. and it's a place where the code is 
maintained by anybody who has time. Since there is almost no difference 
if code is within  wxCode or wxWidgets it's not necessary to move over 
albeit it would mean some kind of blessing. In any way putting code 
first at wxCode has the advantage to see if others really want it. 
Beside I guess so far any larger project uses some code from wxCode.

About your case, there is no limitation in the size of a component 
albeit you should at least be determined enough to maintain the code. 
Code which isn't maintained for a longer period will be removed. And you 
should consider how your code fits into the structure of wxCode and 
wxWidgets.

Look on a website, then type a string manual in a dialog, etc
It is very unergonomic. Is not there a better CVS client like
SourceSafe? (I never thougt that I would call SourceSafe as 'better'! ;)

sorry - my fault.
The problem is that IIRC there was some mess about the right protocol to 
use. E.g. I remember that :ext: was not working with some TortoiseCVS 
releases. I've update maintainer guide anyway.

yes, you can avoid it creating an SSH key you can use the Putty suite.

See:

for generating the key. After you've generated it, you must run pageant 
(part of putty suite) with that key loaded in and it will magically 
handle all password requests automatically ;)

[wxCode-users] CVS newby needs help

Hello! im the guy who long long ago... wrote the wxMSWResources 
component, but dint set it up with CVS, i just created a release, and i 
promised that when i had the time i would learn about CVS, and do things 
right.
Well, i got some time now, and ibe been trying to do it but im having 
trouble:
1.- I downloaded & installed Tortoise CVS
2.- in an appropiate folder in my computer, i chose (from the context 
menu) "CVS Checkout..."
3.- at the dialog i entered the information exactly as it sais in the 
"wxCode mantainer guide", heres the CVSROOT (whatever that is :) )
:ssh:erd...@cv...:/cvsroot/wxcode

The exact info i enteredin the dialog was:
 - Protocol : Secure Shell (:ssh:)
 - Server: cvs.sourceforge.net
 - Port: I LEFT THIS BLANK cause i dont know wich port to set  (maybe 
this is the problem??)
 - Repository folder: /cvsroot/wxcode
 - User Name: erd_1507 (wich is my user name of course)
 - Module: since i do NOT want to get all the code in wxCode, i followed 
the instructions on the mantainer guide to only get MY component, so i 
entered the module in several ways (none worked), i tried with:
wxCode/components/wxMSWResources
wxCode/components/wxmswres
After it dint work i tried to get the entire wxCode to test. (dint work 
either)

- When i was asked for my password, i entered it (not gonna say it here 
tho :)

The error i ALLWAYS had was this (im pasting from the Checkout dialog)
cvs.exe checkout: warning: unrecognized response `' from cvs server
cvs.exe checkout: warning: unrecognized response `Welcome to 
cvs1.sourceforge.net' from cvs server
cvs.exe checkout: warning: unrecognized response `' from cvs server
cvs.exe checkout: warning: unrecognized response `This is a restricted 
Shell Account' from cvs server
cvs.exe checkout: warning: unrecognized response `You cannot execute 
anything here.' from cvs server
cvs.exe checkout: warning: unrecognized response `' from cvs server

Error, CVS operation failed

i tought maybe i was setting the wrong password, but i can login to the 
"Edit your component" place of wxCode, so i guess the password is OK.
Can anyone tell me what im doing wrong?

TortoiseCVS only load the hole wxCode components.

I think I need an other cvs-client under Win98.
I only want to see a list of all components or something like a
directory listing. Then I want to select a component and load
(checkout/get) it.

Some components may have not made a release yet. You can use CVS to
get a copy of them

I read some interesting components on wxcode.com.

I tried to download them with the downloadlink there. It views a
sourceforge list with all wxcode components.

But the comp I need are not in the list. for example wxThing, wxArchiv,
wxZipStream, etc

No, wxCode is a repository for small to medium sized projects that are
add-ons to wxWidgets providing new widgets, data classes or whatnot.

There were some answers about this on wx-users IIRC. For single little
functions like this putting them into a new project wxCode would be
overkill. I haven't used wxforum myself, but it looks like a good
place to put functions like this.

Until now I haven't used SVN, but word has it that it's a good versioning 
system. So maybe it's a good idea to switch to SVN. On the other hand I have no 
idea how complicated it will be to learn using new SVN tools. And I got along 
with CVS quite well. So add one more undecided.

But I would strongly suggest to use only one versioning system. I find it quite 
inconvenient to use CVS _and_ SVN to get the whole of wxCode.

If we decide to move to subversion, then I can enable subversion for 
wxCode. Then, automatically the entire CVS repository will be imported

To resume the situation, currently there are 2 developers voting pro (me 
and cecilio), one voting against (john) and two undecided (otto?,
