It may be a good idea to allow an item with childen and with parent, to be re assigned to a different parent with its children.

You are absolutely right, and come to think of it, I'm surprised that nobody asked for this before
=> accepted with max. priority, will be implemented in the following weeks... hopefully (probably no new release, but check SVN)

A new method SetItemParent() allows to change an item's parent.
The sample program demonstrates its use through the drap & drop events
